Abstract
The 'Feature-Constraint model' discussed here is a conceptual data model describing mechanical piece parts using features and positional constraints. The model is intended to serve as the central data representation for a variety of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) applications. The functionality of the model is similar to the proposed Product Definition Exchange Specification (PDES); however, simplifications and modifications have been introduced to use the model as an active demonstration database rather than an exchange standard. An extended Feature-Constraint model has been implemented in an object-oriented database management system. The structure of the Feature-Constraint model is reviewed. Similar subsets of the proposed PDES standard are then presented using a parallel data modeling strategy.
