Abstract

Problems involved in reconciling the use of rivers for practical purposes with the preservation of their ecological and landscape values were explored at a three-day international conference held at the University of York in September 1990. Papers presented dealt with the broad themes, of the case for conservation, the assessment of conservation potential, recovery and rehabilitation, and the role of legislation and public participation in protecting rivers.
