N2 - Little question remains that the causative agent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the newly recognized retrovirus, human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type III (HTLV-III).1 2 3 4 5 AIDS, the AIDS-related complex, and asymptomatic HTLV-III infection have been associated with several well-defined high-risk groups, including recipients of blood and blood products.6 7 8 Protection of our nation's blood and plasma supply from HTLV-III contamination has been one of the highest public health priorities related to the AIDS epidemic. Studies of symptomatic and asymptomatic members of high-risk groups indicate that those who are infected with HTLV-III are also likely to be positive for HTLV-III antibody.3,9 10 11 Tests.
