Abstract

The sensitivity of a mechanism is a measure of how tolerances, clearances and link deflections affect its kinematic performance. The relationship between the sensitivity of a four bar linkage and the location of its moving pivots is investigated for the particular objective of three position synthesis. Sensitivity maps are plotted in the design plane making it possible to synthesize a mechanism with the desired sensitivity value or optimize sensitivity for a set of acceptable mechanism solutions. Since sensitivity is shown to be related to transmission angle, the desired plots are useful for transmission angle optimization.
