Abstract

Sexual disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) are divided into three major categories: 1) sexual dysfunctions, problems in sexual desire or disturbances in the psychophysiologic changes that are part of the sexual response cycle; 2) paraphilias, which involve recurrent intense sexual urges or fantasies, or behaviors that involve unusual objects, activities, or situations that are, by and large, not culturally sanctioned; and 3) gender identity disorders, which are characterized by dissatisfaction with one's biological gender and often a desire to undergo gender reassignment. In this chapter, we review the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, etiology, assessment, and treatment of these disorders.
