Abstract

Results are presented from DNS computations on a 4:1 elliptic cone in hypersonic flow. Solutions are obtained on large grids using a high order, low dissipation scheme to capture the very small scales in the flow. This allows for the study of disturbance growth occurring in both the centerline and crossflow boundary layers. The simulations are based on flow visualization experiments due to Huntley.3 Acoustic noise is added into the computational freestream to fully model the experimental conditions. In the work presented here four Reynolds numbers were simulated and found to have good agreement with experiment.
