The nonlinearity of optical fibers can be exploited to cancel dispersion in subcarrier multiplexed transmissions. The inherent immunity of solitons to dispersion and nonlinearities makes them good candidates for subcarrier transmission systems, especially over long distances or within reconfigurable optical networks where an inherent dispersion-immune transmission is preferred. A soliton train was used to sample the subcarrier signals and then transmit these samples across the fiber. If the signal bandwidth is less than half of the soliton sampling rate, the signal can be recovered using bandpass filtering.
