Abstract

The application of orthonormalization methods to the solution of problems of heat conduction, convection, and radiation is described. The solutions are in closed form and are carried out in conjunction with a digital computer, using widely available sub-routines. Once a basic computer program has been prepared, it can be applied with only minor modifications to a wide range of problems. In the solution of conduction and convection problems, the relevant boundary and initial conditions, imposed at a discrete number of points, are satisfied in the least-squares sense. Forproblems of radiant interchange, the governing integral equations are satisfied in the least-squares sense at a discrete number of points.
