Abstract

The spin reorientation transition (SRT) in face-centered-tetragonal (fct) Fe/Cu(001) from out of plane to in plane, as induced by Ni-capping atoms was determined. The 'true' critical thickness for the fct-Fe films was estimated to be 4.3 monolayers, by extrapolating to zero Ni thickness. It was shown that this result is very close to the value obtained using Co-capping layers as reported in literature.
