Abstract
Of the US commercial forestland in forest industry ownership, 80% is owned by 40 companies. Corporate timberland strategies changed between 1969 and 1978. Financial returns were deemphasized in favor of a more long-range perspective toward productivity and fiber supply security. Wood-based subsidiaries of large companies with a different main line of business managed their timberlands no differently than did a sample of similarly sized companies dependent on wood.-from Authors Dept Forest Science, Texas A&M University, College Station, U.S.A.
