Abstract

Process control is a critical link in achieving safe and efficient-operation of process and energy systems. Sustainability is closely tied with the design of process systems. It is achieved through recovery and recycle of mass and energy, efficient management of carbon cycle, emission and waste reduction and renewable and green process alternatives. Growing concerns about climatic changes and more stringent emission regulations enforced globally have been key drivers for research activity in the area of emission and effluent management. Process control can facilitate the attainment of environmental regulations while keeping the corresponding overhead costs at a minimum. Integration of large amounts of renewable energy resources into the power supply is perhaps the most direct way to reduce the carbon intensity of electricity and improve the overall sustainability of the power infrastructure.
