Synthesis of new renewable polymers from terpenes

Abstract

Large-volume, commercial plastics are derived from petrochemical feedstocks. The development of renewable feedstocks for established and new polymeric materials is gaining momentum in marketplace, as exemplified by the industrial-scale production of polylactide, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and other polymers with varying levels of renewable content. I will present our efforts to convert members of the terpene family, a broad class of naturally-occurring isoprenoids, into new polymeric materials. Specifically, I will discuss how menthol can be transformed into a low Tg, amorphous polyester with utility as a soft segment in biorenewable thermoplastic elastomers and the conversion of myrcene into a semicrystalline polydiene.
