Studies on the mechanism of adjuvant action of the homoribopolymers, polyadenylic acid complexed to polyuridylic acid, are reviewed. The available evidence suggests that polynucleotides stimulate several different immunocompetent cells, but that the adjuvant effect is most profound in instances of T cell deficiencies. Both the helper effect on antibody synthesis and effector activity in mediated immunity are elevated by this nontoxic adjuvant.
