Abstract

This paper presents the results of some preliminary experiments which have been conducted using a Couette flow rotating cylinder device to quantify the effects of fluid motion on biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The experiments will provide a correlation between stagnant and dynamic BOD values. The experiments were conducted with E. coli to determine the relationship between energy dissipation rates in the fluid and the associated change in BOD. This will be useful in better characterizing BOD in aquatic and engineered environments. Copyright ASCE 2004.
