Abstract

The Avengers, Earth's mightiest heroes of the Marvel comics universe, saved our planet from an army of hostile aliens and the Norse god of mischief Loki in 2012's blockbuster hit, Marvel's The Avengers. We consider here the previously underappreciated role that chemistry and materials science played in keeping Earth safe from this extraterrestial invasion. The chemical composition of Hawkeye's bow, Iron Man's suit of armor and Captain America's shield are discussed, and a scientific mechanism is proposed to account for the "enchanted" aspects of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
