We consider here the previously underappreciated role that chemistry and materials science played in keeping Earth safe from this extraterrestial invasion. The chemical composition of Hawkeye's bow, Iron Man's suit of armor and Captain America's shield are discussed, and a scientific mechanism is proposed to account for the {"}enchanted{"} aspects of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.",
