The secondary strategy for innovation, especially popular over the last 10 years, is to move fundamental work into universities. In the USthAis trend, has been accelerated by the federal government’s interest in fostering industrial± university collaborations, especially through research centres supported by the National Science Foundation. While such centres have produced some successes, I believe they are not major sources of innovation. Most professors are adaptors who believe in scholarship, in sustaining the archive of the accomplishments of the human race. That’ s why professors revere libraries. One does not need a library in order to innovate. In fact, reading the literature may be a handicap rather than an aid.
