Abstract

This chapter illustrates from three perspectives the practice of community engagement and collaboration in scientific research. Termed the "community-based participatory research" (CBPR), this method seeks to obtain objective and trustworthy scientific data from participating communities, as opposed to the traditional practices of detachment and impersonal communication. By fostering trust between the research institutions and their research subjects, both sides can effectively produce objective data and facilitate social change.
