Thermal and material characterization of immersed heat exchangers for solar domestic hot water

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of methods to characterize the thermal performance of heat exchangers immersed in thermal storage vessels intended for solar domestic water heating systems and to assess the mechanical durability and scaling potential of polymers for this application. Recent research at the University of Minnesota is summarized and recommendations are made for future research to further the development of polymer heat exchangers and piping.
