Abstract

We present for the first time a two-dimensional quantitative model of mm-scale Fe-Zn banding in ZnS ore mineral sphalerite. Banded ring-like compositional pattern is shown to arise due to a self-propagating sequence of growth and dissolution (so-called coarsening wave). Conditions for generating and preserving such a pattern are discussed.
