Abstract
A Scientific Status Summary that provides views related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a family of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), is presented. Each of these diseases manifests different symptoms and involves differing genetics, transmissibility, and pathology. The agents responsible for the TSEs are called prions, proteins that are unique in that they are devoid of nucleic acid. The primary areas warranting focus are development of testing methodologies for detecting prions in live animals, and identifying products potentially contaminated with ruminant proteins or infectious tissue (SRM).
