Abstract

Rubber elasticity of a polymer network is one of the most distinctive features of a long chain molecule. The retractive force of such a network is mainly due to the change of configurational entropy of network strands. The authors have prepared alpha , omega -dihydroxypoly(isoprene) prepolymers by anionic method and crosslinked them with a trifunctional reagent to form network. With higher molecular weights of the prepolymers than hitherto tried, we were able to stretch the sample up to a factor of two in extension ratio and the scattering from deuterated network strands in 8% and 15% by weight was precise enough to afford quantitative comparison with the theories.
