Abstract

A pulse-contour/Windkessel analysis has been used to determine the effects of vasoactive drugs on the impedance properties of the peripheral vascular load for patients with congestive heart failure. The response to vasodilators and converting enzyme inhibitors are compared with respect to changes in vascular resistance and compliance, as well as directly measured hemodynamic variables. This methodology permits an indirect measure of vascular compliance to augment the routinely used resistive description of vascular behavior.
