Abstract

Whether it originates from households, industries, or stormwater runoff, wastewater composition is highly influenced by its source. Household and industrial wastewater may combine with storm water in municipal treatment plants, mixing and diluting constituents previously concentrated at their source. As wastewater is increasingly recognized as a resource, recovery opportunities need to be identified along with the treatment options. Wastewater composition affects both the objectives of resource recovery and treatment efficiency. A complete understanding of what makes up wastewater and where those constituents come from may help in achieving a more sustainable use and treatment of wastewater.
