Funding Information:The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) of the US Department of Health and Human Services has recently published three volumes aimed at improving the clinical management of heart failure. 1 One is an in-depth review of current treatment strategies with recommendations based on the degree to which the interventions have been established in well-controlled trials. The second is a quick reference guide for clinicians that includes a number of algorithms aimed at ass!sting primary-care doctors in providing appropriate care (see summary in this issue of the Journal). The third is a reference guide for patients to improve their understanding of this complex clinical syndrome. These documents from the Federal Government are soon to be joined by a document being developed by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology, one being developed by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, a guideline to be published by the European Society of Cardiology, and a guideline currently being prepared by the World Health Organization. All of these are aimed at closing the gap between research results and clinical practice in the management of heart failure.
