Abstract

A thymus-specific subunit of the proteasome, β5t, was previously described and shown to be essential for positive selection of CD8+ T cells. In this issue of Immunity, Nitta et al. (2010) suggest that β5t is essential because it alters the specific peptide-MHC complexes displayed by cortical epithelial cells.
