Abstract

Syncope has a variety of causes, and the history and physical examination are diagnostic in about half of cases. Syncope during exercise, for example, may point to aortic stenosis, whereas syncope following exercise is seen in persons with idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. Diagnostic testing is individualized depending on the likelihood of a neurologic, neurovascular, or cardiac cause.
