Abstract

This study tests Hayes and Wheelwright's framework of world class manufacturing, which features six dimensions of practice and five dimensions of performance. It was tested using plant-level data from three industries in the U.S. Each practice was found to be related to at least one dimension of performance, and several were related to multiple performance dimensions. Examination of the relationships indicated that there were compatibilities between performance dimensions, rather than the tradeoffs postulated by Hayes and Wheelwright.
