Abstract
An off line minicomputer data analysis system was developed to deduce cell size from the homogeneity of poststimulus multiple unit activity in space and time. Spatiotemporal correlations were computed between poststimulus time histograms from microelectrodes simultaneously in the dorsal horn of the mouse spinal cord. Minimum correlations reliably indicated small cell activity, specifically activity of substantia gelatinosa (SG). SG unit activity was characteristically low in amplitude (50-100μV) and active up to 100 ms poststimulus. The SG activity was predictive of the negative component of the dorsal root potential.
