Abstract

A study of the relative merits of the Born and Rytov approximations in acoustic tomography is presented. The error in the reconstructed images of the two methods are related to the level of the disturbance introduced by the test object in the homogeneous medium that surrounds it. This provides a theoretical tool to analyze the severity of degradation and interpret the errors that appear in the reconstructed images of simulated cylindrical test objects. The study is indicative of the superiority of the Rytov method to the Born method in solving the inverse problem of the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation based on measurements of the forward-scattering waves.
