Abstract
Mold filling was investigated in the presence of flow channels within a simple mold configuration. Experimental flow front and pressure data measurements were employed to investigate and determine the optimal equivalent permeability value for these channels. The value was dependent on geometric properties and preform permeability. A model for equivalent permeability was developed and used as input for numerical simulation of the mold filling process. The numerical simulations were based on a pure finite element based methodology. Both experimental data and numerical simulations were presented, demonstrating and validating the role of channels in reducing the mold and injection pressures.
