Abstract
The analytical role of the rheology in polymer characterization is reviewed. The important structural models are discussed and their applications to important thermoplastics are illustrated. The polymer chains rheology can be simply illustrated by the rheology of particles suspended in a Newtonian liquid. The dilute polymer solution is considered as a suspension of random coils and the intrinsic viscosity giving a direct measure of polymer molecular weight is calculated. The chain entanglements in polymer concentrated solutions and melts and their effect on polymer rheology are discussed.
