Abstract

Significant changes in New Zealand's stream ecosystems in the period of European colonization are considered. Criteria for the assessment of the natural value of streams and rivers are applied to identify and prioritize natural riverine areas for protection. Natural value is understood from a catchment perspective which includes adjacent floodplains, wetlands and terrestrial vegetation as well as the channel and its biota. (D.W.T.)
