Abstract

Between November 1983 and December 1984, 79 cadaver kidney transplant recipients were treated at Montefiore Medical Center with the immunosuppressive agents cyclosporine and prednisone. One-year patient survival was 98% and kidney survival was 73%. These results, though excellent, were not statistically different from results in this institution immediately preceding the use of cyclosporine. Cyclosporine is a potent immunosuppressive agent, often effective when other agents have failed. However, it is toxic and expensive. Further study and experience is necessary to define its role in cadaver kidney transplantation.
