Abstract

The extent of the degradation of Australian rivers and streams and the prospects for conservation and rehabilitation are reviewed. The degradation has resulted from water extraction, pollution, stream regulation and the introduction of exotic taxa. Attempts to conserve rivers and streams in the state of Victoria and to restore degraded ecosystems are also examined. (D.W.T.)
