Abstract
Coagulated tar left in biomass downdraft gasifier would consequencely corrode it. An exploratory downdraft gasifier was improved with unique biomass pyrolysis technology and innovative tar cracking mechanism that gasification area with high temperature, which was provided by system itself, made the biomass gasified more completely. The design of metal wire mesh and L shape choke plate keeps the necessary temperature for the cracking of volatile tar and ensures the contact time of gas and dolomite catalyst. Air/gas mixer equipped with automatic air intake facilitates the gas burning sufficiently and increases the gas calorific value. A series of research trials of using wood shavings as the gasifier feedstock have been conducted. Compared with the ordinary gasifier on the market, the catalytic efficiency of the tar processing system in this study reached 48%. The effect of catalytic cracking was obvious and the content of H2 increased by 4%.
