Effect of insulin, growth hormone & hydrocortisone on the in vitro incorporation of glycine 14C in normal & traumatized rat muscle

Abstract

Insulin and bovine growth hormone increase incorporation of glycine 14C into normal rat muscle in vitro. Hydrocortisone reduces incorporation of this aminoacid and antagonizes the action of insulin and growth hormone. Muscles taken immediately after traumatizing the rats show less incorporation of glycine 14C whereas 24 hr later the incorporation into muscle is increased. Insulin, growth hormone and hydrocortisone do not influence the incorporation of glycine into muscle taken from traumatized rats. It is suggested that some changes may occur at cell membrane level following trauma which may prevent these factors from affecting the rate of glycine 14C incorporation.
