Abstract

To the Editor: Buchwald et al. (Oct. 4 issue)* do a disservice to their careful study by presenting their data in a confusing and incomplete fashion. In the section “Overall and Cause-Specific Mortality,” they report 44 deaths in the control group and 32 deaths in the surgery group that were due to atherosclerotic coronary heart disease. However, in the section “End Points Combined with Mortality,” they report only 29 and 23 deaths from this cause in the control and surgery groups, respectively. They also do not tell us how many patients had recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarctions, nor is it possible.
