Abstract

To estimate damage in a quantitative manner, a technique used whereby six values of linear strain are measured on a material element as a function of hydrostatic pressure. The high precision data from three orthogonal planes enable the complete strain tensor to be determined. It is possible to close existing microcracks within the material by applying pressure in excess of 50 MPa. The information on damage is related to the fracture toughness of a microcracked solid (granite).
