Abstract

In the following paper, the topic of film cooling is introduced along with some of the film cooling design choices which led to present-day configurations. The role of modern film cooling research is discussed in light of present needs to support the direct development of cooling designs as well as the development of computational design software. An experimental program conducted at the University of Minnesota is outlined as an example. In the discussion of this program, measurements which show the effects of elevated turbulence intensity in the gas path and changes in the coolant delivery geometry are presented. These are discussed for cooling schemes with both in-line injection and lateral injection. Data from the lateral injection case are discussed in more detail, including some new measurement results that show temperature fields in the coolant/mainstream mixing zone and adiabatic effectiveness distributions on the protected surface.
