Abstract

A flow visualization system has been used to obtain the heat transfer distribution and the region of melting around a circular cylinder that is placed in a solid close to its melting point. The measurement makes use of direct flow visualization and observation of the pattern of the molten region to determine the heat transfer rate on the outer interface between the liquid and the melting solid. Naphthalene is used for the melting material. A constant-temperature circulator maintains the test system close to the melting point of the naphthalene. Preliminary measurements show the results for melting with virtually no subcooling.
