Abstract

Decriminalisation has been recognised by venereologists as having a major effect on the statistics and tracing of contacts of homosexually-transmitted VD. Morton (1971) has indicated that 'From the venereologist's point of view (this English law reform of 1967) has been a most welcome aspect of the liberalisation of our sex laws.' Such a view contrasts strongly with the suggestion made by fundamentalist religious groups and other organisations opposing liberalisation of such laws that the 'permissive society' must take much of the responsibility for the spread of VD today.
