Abstract

Peripheral vascular impedance is an important determinant of cardiac function that is generally reported as a purely resistive term, the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR), or as PVR in combination with characteristic impedance. Impedance measurement requires invasive instrumentation not generally available in the hemodynamic laboratory or clinic setting. Another approach to measuring vascular load analyzes the morphology of a distal arterial pressure wave and relates changes in waveform to vascular impedance components described in terms of a modified Windkessel model. Hemodynamic variables and vascular impedance parameters are studied for a group of patients with congestive heart failure in response to an acute infusion of sodium nitroprusside, a vasoactive drug used in treating CHF.
