Abstract

A case study is presented to demonstrate the potential importance of investigating variability among small prehistoric communities in a region through the excavation of their settlements. The results provide new insight into the economic changes that were taking place prior to the formation of the commercial centers of Early Iron Age Europe. Conclusions are based on recent excavations at Altdorf and earlier ones at Hascherkeller, both in Bavaria, West Germany. © 1986 Maney Publishing.
