Abstract

Describes design and initial testing of an underwater sound recorder, the MAFOS, which is derived from a standard RAFOS float. MAFOS is placed on a recoverable deep sea mooring, does not require an Argos transmitter, and has a simplified ballast release mechanism. Outlines the electronic design and presents results of experiments in the Iberian basin using three sound sources for MAFOS. Discusses how the passing of an eddy of Mediterranean outflow water (a meddy) was detected from differences in pressure and time series. (C.J.U.)
