Abstract

Several technologically important properties of Co/Pd superlattices are examined via electronic structure calculations. The large and irregular value of the saturation magnetization per Co is attributed to an enhanced Co moment and unexpected Pd spin polarizations. Calculations for the Co/2Pd superlattice find a perpendicular easy axis, as found experimentally, and suggest that the relatively small Kerr rotation is association with a weak Pd orbital polarization.
