Abstract
The magnetostriction of stress-induced Fe 7Pd 3 was investigated. The striction values were found to reach 1980 ppm if the martensite is induced by a compressive stress of -12 MPa in the small temperature interval. It was proposed that the observed magnetostriction reflects the formation and response of metastable adaptive orthorhombic martensite to the externally applied magnetic field. The results show that the transformation to austenite beyond 2000 Oe results in a shortening of the sample and the first strain maximum.
