Abstract

We define the overall width W and the mean peak width w of a normalized function ψ (x). We show W ≤ 2Δx and w > (2Δp)-1, where Δx and Δp are standard deviations. Analogous relations hold for the Fourier transform. The uncertainty principle is expressed precisely by these relations, not by ΔxΔp ≥ 1 2.
