Abstract

Cells of B. megaterium can use the externally added precursors UDP N acetyl D glucosamine and UDP N acetyl D muramyl L alanyl D glutamyl meso diaminopimelyl D alanyl D alanine to synthesize peptidoglycan if the bacteria are first treated with toluene. Toluene treated bacteria can polymerize these precursors into peptidoglycan which is attached to previously existing cell wall by peptide crossbridges.
