    Abstract

This case study of the zabbaleen (garbage collectors) of Cairo describes how persons in the informal sector are linked to each other. Relations of solidarity among members of the same trade are traced back to the precapitalistic system of urban guilds, which still existed at the turn of the century. The relations of patronage and dependence are analyzed which link small producers to the merchants who supply them with capital and distribute their products. -English summary
