Abstract

The smart grid is generally considered to be the next generation power system that will significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of the power grid, particularly with the integration of renewable energy resources and demand response. In the context of the power grid as a major critical infrastructure supporting other critical infrastructure systems, resiliency and security have become increasingly important. The recent occurrence of extreme weather events and blackouts underscore the need for a resilient power grid that can quickly recover and restore critical services in the case of disruptions. This research explores the resilience of an electricity distribution network that is supported in part by microgrids. In particular, this study examines how microgrids can enhance the resilience of future power systems during emergencies, both natural and manmade, by planning for significant events and bolstering capabilities to recover quickly with minimal damage. Results of this paper provide a better understanding of both issues and solutions related to using microgrids to enhance power grid resiliency, and will provide insights on future research directions.
